What is the UDS test?
Urodynamic studies (UDS) test how well the bladder, sphincters, and urethra hold and release urine. These tests can show how well the bladder works and why there could be leaks or blockages. There are many types of urodynamic tests.

What is a urodynamic test used for?

Most urodynamic tests focus on how well your bladder can hold and empty urine. Urodynamic tests can also show whether your bladder is contracting when it’s not supposed to, causing urine to leak. All parts of the urinary tract—the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra—must work together to urinate normally.
Is urodynamic procedure painful?
During the test, the doctor will be filling your bladder with sterile fluid. As the doctor examines the bladder surfaces you will feel the camera inside your bladder. Most patients say it is slightly uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t hurt.
How is a UDS performed?
A UDS is done by placing a catheter in your child’s bladder and another catheter in your child’s rectum. A catheter is a small, thin tube that is used to drain fluid, such as urine. To place the catheter, your child will lie on the X-ray table and their legs will be placed in a “frog leg” position.

How do you prepare for an urodynamic test?
Urodynamic testing prep Most urodynamic tests do not require any special preparation. For some of the procedures your doctor may ask you to drink fluids prior to the test so your bladder will be full.

At a high-level, urodynamics testing may be prescribed for one of the following reasons:
- the patient has moderate to severe involuntary release of urine.
- other tests do not determine the cause of incontinence.
- the patient appears to have more than one cause of incontinence.
- the patient is considering having surgery.
How do I prepare for the UDS test?
Food- No special diet is needed. The day of the test your child may eat and drink as usual. If your child has a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) on the day of the test, the test may need to be rescheduled. Bowel Preparation – Please follow the Enema instructions given to you by the clinic.
Can I eat before a urodynamic test?
There is no need to limit the amount of food that is consumed before the test.
Are you asleep for a cystoscopy?
