Can you use any wool for felting?
Put simply, it just means what you use for the centre or bulk of your project and it can be any medium/coarse wool. If your top layer is going to be a different colour or you are using a fine wool; Merino Corriedale or similar. Core wool can be used to needle felt your basic shape and then covered with dyed wool.
What is felting wool called?
Felting Wool or Roving Wool comes in many different forms from raw, unwashed wool to processed roving and yarn. Any of these fibers will work just fine.
Can Merino wool be felted?
One way to treat Merino wool to make it tougher and stronger is to felt it. Felting comes in stages, starting from very light felting where the wool is barely altered to completely felted where Merino shrinks in its fibers and becomes hard and durable.
Do you need to card wool before felting?
After drying, the wool needs to be teased apart into fluffy clouds of fiber before carding. You can card by hand or if you’re lucky enough to have a drum carder, it’s much faster. The drum carder makes nice fluffy batts and can even be used to make a roving.
How long do you boil wool to felt it?
While you’re waiting, fill one side of your sink with cold water. After 7 minutes of boiling, remove the wool from the pot and place it in your sink of cold water. You can use a sturdy pair of tongs to grab the wool.
Is wool felt expensive?

Other than wool, the best fiber to use for needle-felting is silk. Silk is a strong fiber that resists breakage and fraying better than man-made substitutes. It also holds the texture created with the needles better than polyester fabrics do; polyester fabrics tend to release the texture too soon.
Can cashmere be felted?

Can you use roving yarn for felting?
The roving you find here is mainly for spinning into yarn which is great and will usually work fine for needle felting. Wool roving for spinning is often blended with a variety of different fibers such as silk or nylon so be careful to purchase roving that is not blended and is from one breed of sheep.
