How do I set up XLaunch?
Running Xming:
- To run Xming, select XLaunch from the Start Menu.
- Select ‘Multiple Windows’.
- Select ‘Start no client’ to make XLaunch wait for other programs (such as PuTTY).
- Select ‘Clipboard’ to share the clipboard.
- Finally save the configuration.

What is the difference between Xming and XLaunch?
Xming comes with more programs to start-up, VcXsrv relies on Xlaunch. On my Samsung Notebook 9 pen with Intel UHD 620 graphics, VcXsrv tries to do hardware acceleration by default, which doesn’t work, don’t know why. I had to unclick the option when running Xlaunch. Xming defaults straight to software OpenGL.
Is Xming free?
Xming X Server for Windows was a free download product with the latest public domain release in 2016. The 2019 versions now require payment. Cygwin is a large collection of GNU and Open Source tools which provide functionality similar to a Linux distribution on Windows.
How do I know if X11 is installed?
If you want to check whether x11 is installed, run dpkg -l | grep xorg . If you want to check if x11 is currently running (if logged in) then run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE . Paste the output.

What is the xlaunch program?
The xlaunch program is used to start the Xwin server. If no .xlaunch configuration file is given on the command line, xlaunch will present a GUI with the default configuration for running Xwin.
How does xlaunch work with Xwin?
If the -run option is used, xlaunch will load the Xwin server configuration from that file, and then run Xwin using that configuration, and any clients specified by the configuration. If the configuration specifies a local client to run, xlaunch will wait until that client exits before exiting.
What happens if no xlaunch configuration file is given on command line?
If no .xlaunch configuration file is given on the command line, xlaunch will present a GUI with the default configuration for running Xwin. On completing the configuration, you have the option to run Xwin using that configuration, and/or to save that configuration in a .xlaunch file for later use.
