How do you identify aircraft bolts?
Aircraft quality bolts are made from alloy steel, stainless or corrosion resistant steel, aluminum alloys and titanium. Within our industry the first two are the most common. Aircraft bolts will always have a marking on their head. If you see no markings at all on the head of a bolt, do not use it.

What is Rivet identification code?
130 Cards in this Set

Solid rivets are classified according to what three factors? | Size, material, and head shape. |
---|---|
What publication lists proper torque values for structural hardware? | NA 01-1A-8. |
What position of a rivet identification code identifies the length of the rivet? | The second position. |
Where may a fiber lock nut not be used?
Where may a fiber lock nut be used? A fiber lock nut may not be used or installed in areas where the temperatures exceed 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
How do you read NAS bolts?
The number following the dash indicates the length in eighths (1/8) of an inch up to 7/8. If a bolt is longer than an inch the first digit is the number of inches and the second digit is the number of eighths. For example: AN3-12 is a bolt with 3/16 inch diameter and the length is 1 inch plus 2/8 or 1-1/4 inch long.

What is aircraft hardware?
Aircraft hardware is the term used to describe the various types of fasteners and miscellaneous small items used in the manufacture and repair of aircraft.
What is a jo bolt?
Jo-bolt is a trade name for an internally threaded three-piece rivet. The Jo-bolt consists of three parts — a threaded steel alloy bolt, a threaded steel nut, and an expandable stainless steel sleeve. The parts are factory preassembled.
How do you identify aircraft rivets?
Aircraft rivets are identified by the marks on the manufacturer’s head, and the alloys are represented by a letter (or letters) in the part number. Rivets with no head markings are soft 1100 (pure) aluminum, and not used in structural applications.
Can you reuse locking nuts?
They are able to be reused, but only if the prevailing torque meets certain specifications. Lock Nuts with a Nylon Insert are perhaps the most reliable lock nut, as it is only limited by the temperature of the application it has been used in.
Where is Castle nut used in aircraft?
Non-self-locking nuts. The castle nut, AN310, is used with drilled shank AN hex head bolts, clevis bolts, eyebolts, drilled head bolts, or studs. It is fairly rugged and can withstand large tensional loads. Slots (called castellations) in the nut are designed to accommodate a cotter pin or lockwire for safety.
What does NAS bolt mean?
National Aerospace Standard
“NAS” stands for National Aerospace Standard. The NA prefix is for Metric standards. NAS standards include Part Standards for high strength, precision fasteners.
What is the importance of aircraft hardware?
The importance of aircraft hardware is often overlooked because of the small size of most items. However, the safe and efficient operation of any aircraft depends upon the correct selection and use of aircraft hardware.
