The architect responsible for the GPO was the Armagh-born Francis Johnston (1760-1829). The son of a builder, Johnston came to the attention of Richard Robinson (1708-94), Archbishop of Armagh, who appointed him as Architect to the Diocese following the death of Thomas Cooley (1742-84).
